Used for removal_of_chlorine, sediment and organics from water. Organics such as phenols and many pesticides and herbicides are efficiently removed by activated_carbon. Many substance causing moldy, musty, or woody tastes and odors are also removed.

The “Activation” process produces a honeycomb-like structures that has enormous total surface area and gives the activated carbon a large capacity for absorbing impurities in water. An example of this is the fact that one cubic foot of activated carbon will remove the chlorine from one million gallons of water containing 1 ppm of chlorine (based on a fllow rate of 4 GPM per cubic foot, pH 7.2, and a temperature of 70ºF) Greater capacities are available at lower flows, lower pH values, and higher temperature. For efficient removal of organics flow rates should not exceed 1 GPM per cubic foot.
The useful service life of activated_carbon depends upon the imposed load and the extent of fouling of the carbon pores. The filter should be backwashed frequently to keep the bed clean. While these filters also remove sediment, in cases of heavy amount of sediment, a sediment filter ahead of the activated carbon filter is available to prolong the useful life of the carbon. Because activated carbon is corrosive to metals, Water 2000's activated carbon filter tanks have protective internal coating .

Activated carbon filter are widely used to remove both chlorine and organics from water.

Removal_of_chlorine improves the taste_and_odor_of_drinking_water and prolongs the life of water service equipment that is effected by the oxidizing properties of chlorine. Removal of organics will also improve the taste_and_odor of drinking water. Activated carbon filters are general requirements for conditioning water for the bottling_and_beverage_industry. Organics in water include a wide variety of substance including pesticides, herbicides, and industrial solvents for which activated carbon has diverse capacity. Consult the factory when effectiveness or capacity of activated carbon for a particular organic compound has not been proven or identified.

Process Theory
Activated carbon is manufactured by heating selected grades of coal or other higher carbonaceous material in the absence of oxygen. This “activation” process burns out impurities and produces a honeycomb-like structure containing millions of tiny pores. The structure creates a large total surface area that enables the carbon to absorb (attract and hold to the surface ) large quantities of contaminants. Chlorine or its related elements is first absorbed on the surface of the pores where its reacts with carbon to liberate chloride, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Because of this reaction and deterioration of chlorine, the capacity of activated carbon for chlorine removal is exceedingly high. In addition to chlorine removal and absorption of organics, The granular carbon is an effective filter. Although removal of turbidity will shorten the carbon life by blocking pores, the carbon will function as an excellent filters with particle removal down to 40 microns on freshly backwashed beds of carbon.
