Here are some 20 tips to how we can contribute our part in reducing our carbon foot print and slow global warming. Every tip listed here will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, which is what most scientists say is a major contributor to global warming. Emissions- and cost-savings were calculated using the Stop Global Warming calculator.
1. Buy organic and local. Yes, there're a no of reasons reason to buy organic. The chemicals used in much of modern agriculture pollute the water supply and require energy to produce.
2. Buy local foods and products. Not only are locally produced foods fresher and often healthier, buying local reduces the need for fuel to ship the produce and other products to the store or from state to state.
3. Reduce the amount of animal products you consume. Try eating less meat, dairy, eggs! No, this is not a suggestion to become a vegetarian, but eating even one meal without meat each week can help. Cattle are one of the largest providers of greenhouse gas emissions!. Similarly reducing preference of other animal products as leather, wool will help you reduce carbon emissions.
4. Air dry your clothes. Line-drying clothes during the non-rainy months instead of using a dryer can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide, and, as a bonussaving of $75 a year.
5. Change light bulbs. "Compact fluorescent bulbs have such a terrible name, but they use 66 percent less energy. Replacing just three frequently used bulbs in your home can save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide and $60 a year.
6. Go hybrid, or at least think about MPG. If you are looking to change your car, "Look at the new hybrid car. And for good reason: the average hybrid driver could save 16,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Off-setting their higher sticker price is the fact that they can also save $3,750 in gas money. "Short of that, another big thing is to ask, when you buy a car, (think) about its mileage. This also reduce carbon emissison during its whole useful life.
7. Reduce the amount of fuel you use (car, air travel, etc.)- Plan your activities in way to reduce your dependence on car other source. Use Bicycle for short travelling.
8. Inflate car tires and change the air filter. Improperly inflated tires can waste as
much as 250 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and $840 in gas money. A tired air filter can also waste 800 pounds of carbon dioxide and $130 a year. Check both monthly.9. Check the water heater or go tankless. Keeping a water heater thermostat at no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit saves money and reduces emissions. Insulating the water heater adds additional savings.
10. If a home's water heater is very old, or you are looking for purchasing or replacement of water heater, go for the newer style tankless water heaters. They only use energy when hot water is needed rather than having to constantly reheat stored water, saving 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and $390.
11. Consider the shower. With showers accounting for two-thirds of all water heating costs, shorter time showers can save up to 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
12. Change Shower: Switch shower heads to newer low flow models that can still provide a satisfying shower experience. Installing a low-flow showerhead saves another 350 pounds of carbon dioxide.
13. Unplug appliances. Even when a plugged-in electronic appliance is turned off, it can use energy. Play it safe and unplug them, and save more than 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and $256 a year.
14. Using standby electronics –better to turned them off. Most electronic devices now use power even when they are on standby mode or turned off. Anything with a remote control or any computer component with a clock or network card in it will draw power even when not in use. Unplug them or use a smart power strip that turns off power to these vampire peripherals.
15. Play with the thermostat. Set a programmable thermostat as low as possible while remaining comfortable during the winter and as high as possible during the summer. Just two degrees up in summer and two degrees down in winter can save a whopping 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and $98 a year. If it suddenly seems uncomfortable just hit the button to make the unit kick in a little extra A/C for a few minutes rather than wasting it all day long.
16. Plant a tree. What better way to go green than by planting a tree? Trees help suck up the carbon dioxide, provide cleaner air, and save 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
17. When investing in new building materials or new buildings themselves, the best way to prevent global warming is to shop for energy efficient building materials and methods. They may cost a little more up front, but often the environmental benefits are immediate and the financial and energy payback of the materials may kick in in just a few years.
18. Simplify your life and consume less. Often purchases are made on impulse or because of personal wants rather than needs. Try to do with less. It will save money and help reduce greenhouse gases from being released during the manufacturing process.
19. If an appliance is more than twenty years old consider replacing it with an Energy Star rated appliance rather than paying to have the old one fixed.
20. If shopping for something that does not use electricity buy it used! Buying used furniture and other items is a great way to save money and reduce the need for companies to manufacture more stuff.
